Restoring the skin barrier and reduce TEWL (Trans Epidermal Water Loss) is basically the goal of all cosmetic products. In a period of 4 weeks the skin is undergoing a complete renewal. However, there is a loss of important layers of the skin by abrasion and peeling. There is also a loss of vital components of skin from solvents and fluids. Substances and pollutants washing soap natural free fatty acids from the skin leaving holes in the skin structure. Except on a regular basis cosmetics are used, thus the skin drier.
The emulsifiers in most cosmetics have observed the washout effect, which at a later stage is recognizable. Emulsifiers stabilize the oil and fat in the skin transported. The water evaporates but the emulsifiers remain in the skin. If the skin comes into contact with water, for example, showering or cleaning, the emulsifiers which re-activated fatty acids between the fiber and the ingredients in cosmetics are flushed out of the skin. This causes the TEWL up and natural skin regeneration is lowered. The stratum Corneum is structured like a brick. The dead keratin cells are the bricks and the materials between the fibers are the cement.
This cement holds the cells together and in shape through unique and effective barrier layers with a double layer membrane structure similar to that of cell membranes. These layers are also called the ‘lipid bi-layers'.
Where the membrane structure is disrupted, the skin is dehydrated which makes it rough and/or fine lines and wrinkles arise. Also, the skin is more susceptible to penetration of harmful substances.
